The Intrinsic Energies of Tai Chi

DATE: TAB
A very important aspect of Taoism from the most ancient times is an attunement with nature, not only to be able to sense the natural world as part of our selves, but actually being able to absorb chi from it intentionally. All ancient peoples believed the universe, and its natural phenomena, to be made up of chi, the energy that surrounds us and binds us, feeds and sustains, heals, and enlightens us.
The Taoists speak of three aspects of the universe: heaven, earth, and human. (heaven being the stars, the sun, and the moon, the space surrounding earth, not in a religious sense). They say the human being exists between heaven and earth like a tree with branches that reach into the heavens and deep roots which connect us down into the earth; that we are the mediums between the spirit world and ordinary world.
Learn to absorb chi from nature and circulate chi through the body. Learn how to be rooted and grounded, and to create a balance with your yin and yang energies.

Introduction to the Underlying Principles of Yoga

With Michelle Marroquin
Hatha yoga refers to the physical discipline of postures, but underlying this practice is a cohesive set of principles that describe how the universe works. This special two hour class focuses on integrating theoretical and philosophical principles into the asana practice. You will learn about prakriti and purusha, shakti and Siva, and the behavioral precepts (yamas and niyamas) that help dispel our limited assumptions about reality.
Learning more about the philosophy that underlies the hatha yoga practice enables the student to find deeper connections between the challenges of a yoga class and those we face in everyday life, bringing greater meaning to the regular practice of asana.
DATE: TAB
Cost: $25
Michelle Marroquin is passionate about anything that leads to a sense of wholeness. She is certified to teach Pilates, Gyrotonics and Yoga; and has studied Classical Indian Dance, Ballet, Modern/Post-modern dance and Contact Improvisation for over 15 years. Michelle is particularly interested in noting the connections between intuitive wisdom, movement and artistic expression.
Michelle's eclectic journey as a yoga instructor began when she was introduced to Juliu Horvath's Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis system, a set of exercises inspired by yoga and tai chi. This led her to fully investigate yoga for its own sake at New York's Integral Yoga Institute. After completing her first teacher's training in Classical Yoga in 2001, Michelle went on to study Vinyasa, Ashtanga and to learn as much as she could about the history of Yoga. She is most recently inspired by Anusara Yoga and it's Tantric Philosophy.
As a continuously evolving meditator, artist and movement educator, Michelle's interest lies in how all these practices intersect, as well as in what is fruitful and unique to each discipline. Currently, Michelle teaches Yoga in Northampton and is adjunct faculty at Springfield College.
